You can begin to see the influence of Huichol culture here in the doors to one of the main churches in Acopeneta. The facade. Acoponeta has two large churches, I am not sure which one is actually the "cathedral". This is the old church that was built when the railroad was the only access to town and is built along its line.
Places for people to sit.
Many from Acopenta make a "manda" a mix between a pilgrimage and a declaration (from the verb "mandar") to Huajicori, Nayarit. The name Huajicori, in Huichol, means place where there is much peyote. You can see the peyote in the center of the crest. I didnt see any. It definitely doesnt grow there, and actually, Huichol arent common in the area, mostly another tribe, the Cora. There is a shrine to Mary here that is considered miraculous, and the reason many make the manda. This is for my buddy Vic. The source of the hotsprings outside Huajicori Medicinal herbs from the Sierra Madre, gathered mostly by Huichol.
