Please see the website www.iamwalking.org for transcriptions and translations of the prayers, and a place to leave your comments of support, encouragement, and to write your own prayers. There was a "problem" with my camera in the last bunch, so I made them black and white to make the editing more ... streamlined :)

Kites for the Dead Kites for the Dead
Dead of the Dead ceremonies near Antigua...Kite flying is a national pastime in Guatemala, made with tissue paper, these kites were originally part of an indigenous ceremony of kites decorated by the faces of family members, stories from family history, etc., that would allow the souls of ancestors to recognize their families below. The kites are massive, perhaps 30ft or more in width!

Walking through Antigua Walking through Antigua
Antigua, old, the intended colonial capital of Spanish America, destroyed over and over and over by surrounding volcanoes and the way they make the earth shake, and tall buildings crumble. Colonial churches litter the blocks...I have only uploaded photos of a few. A walk down the street, I stumble upon a massive procession for a local saint, tubas blowing through and carry the night.

Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala
(From a caption...) The religious and spiritual landscape has been changing rapidly in the years since the bloody civil war ending in the early 90s. The Catholic Church, who did much to shelter and provide literal sanctuary to indigenous people being slaughtered, are now suffering heavy losses with the rise of secularism and sects of protestant/evangelical Christianity. The Evangelical movement here is largely domestic, ie. not (or no longer imported) but spread to Guatemalans by Guatemalans. One reason for the shift may be to stem the tide of alcoholism, which the Catholic Church doesn´t necessary agree with, but it doesn´t forbid consumption as do many more recent protestant lines.

Prayers-Group 3 Prayers-Group 3
One of the best things about this project is its authentic look into the beliefs, the thinking, expressed through language, of so many different types of people. There is a marked difference between the prayers collected from Los Angeles and the California Coast, Arizona, etc. and the prayers collected in Mexico and now Guatemala. That said, the more I talk to people, the more prayers I read, I see that when it comes down to it, we all have the same basic needs, fears, doubts, hopes, and dreams.

Oaxaca City Oaxaca City
After walking 83km (my longest day on record) I arrived in the city of Oaxaca at about 2 in the morning. Stretching my back on a concrete bus stop bench, I was approached by a stranger in the night. Clothes wet, cut and bruised, he had just been beaten and robbed by the police. Seeing me there, he wanted to practice his English and I told him about the project. He turned out to be an awesome person, and invited me to stay with him at his friend´s house for the night. On the way home, he told me about his love, his passion, playing guitar, while also showing me where he had lost 2 fingers on his left hand in an accident at work the week before. Undanted, he was detirmined to learn to play with is right hand like his heros McCartney and Hendrix. What I love about Mexico isn´t so much the architecture, as seen in many of these photos, but in the hearts of the people who make my walk through this country truly memorable.

Coastal Chiapas Coastal Chiapas
Chiapas is amazing. My only regret is that I wasnt able to spend more time there. Really feeling the pinch of time as my visa was running out, i was running to the border with Guatemala as quickly as I could. Again, without batteries or money to replace them, I was only able to squeeze out a few shots of this beautiful countryside.

Leaving Oaxaxa Leaving Oaxaxa
Still very mountainous, the road from Oaxaca City to the coast was downhill, with environs and terrain changing drastically every 10-20k. Many wild experiences here, from collecting crickets for food to staying with a former Pentacostal minister, now brothel owner who gave me food, tea, and shelter for the night in a van filled with condoms and ganja (sorry if you dont like it folks, this is the real deal). Stranded in the middle of nowhere, in the rain, the women helped me, treated me with kindness, as I listened to their stories and prayers. The mountains turn to a coastal plane further down the road. Frigid nights turn balmy with hotter days than I have ever experienced in my life. Walking from 12ish to 4ish, I would feel l I was going to pass out, so I often walked silent nights and empty highways in the company of the moon.

Walking into Oaxaca Walking into Oaxaca
Though pressed for time (I had 3 weeks to walk 700 miles), the people and terrain of Oaxaca stunned me, step by step, at rapid pace. This is the first album of three in Oaxaca...trying to upload on very slow connections...but wait for the next few albums! Mexico, from the heart of Guatemala!

The Bosque Village is permaculture retreat center high in the mountains of Michoacan. The people at the Bosque found out about the iamwalking.org project and invited me to stay with them for a few days. This is an incredible place, incredible people, up to trying something new in this world, thinking differently about the way we approach almost everything in life. www.bosquevillage.com

Frida Kahlo´s Home and Coyoacan Frida Kahlo´s Home and Coyoacan
This is one of the best parts of the city, but I still have yet to get good pics of Coyocan. We were allowed to take pictures of the outside of Frida and Diego´s home, but not the inside...where there is a fantastic museum featuring their works, libraries, studios, etc...Interesting Bauhaus-ish architecture of volcanic rock, built around the same time as waterfall.

On the Road to Guadalajara: Magdalena to Tequila On the Road to Guadalajara: Magdalena to Tequila
Thats right! Tequila. A unesco site, it is a little spoiled by tourism, and it is still a beautiful city. At the foot of a volcano and at the base of a cliff to rival the Grand Canyon, the city looks north toward an unparalleled view of the Sierra Madre, surrounded and studded by this plant at the heart of Mexican culture.

On the Road to Guadalajara: St. Tomas to Magdalena On the Road to Guadalajara: St. Tomas to Magdalena
Here the old, unpaved cobbled road, brings you to another very old town with a fort, almost never visited by foreigners. The path brings you past abandoned mango groves and mountains leading down into an agricultural basin where they grow mostly agave (used to make Tequila). Magdalena is a beautiful city, with the cathedral, built by Franiscans as a monastery, completed in the mid 1700s. I stayed in a bed at the local Catholic Church, and had a very interesting conversation with the local priest, which I will tell you more about soon.

Santa Maria del Oro Santa Maria del Oro
I am starting to get into "old" mexico. This town was founded by the nephew of Cortez and has a rich history, often tragic, and at odds (I cant even say that...there were outrageous massacres here) between the indigenous and the Spanish seeking gold. The Francsicans tempered these abuses, protecting the Huichol, but discrimination is persistant.

Prayers: Group 1 Prayers: Group 1
This project s not about I, it is not about walking, and it is not about Brazil. This project is about the collecting and sharing of authentic prayers across the borders of language, culture, country, class, and creed. This project is about people praying for one another without judgement. This project is about you stepping into someone elses shoes, their view, their hopes, their fears, their families, and seeing that their prayers are often your own. This project is about seeing that walking is not difficult, just take the first step. That we make up in our minds what is difficult and important. This project is about us holding that with God, anything is possible in life. That what you think is possibile is possible and so much more when tapped into that realm beyond yourself. Pleae help translate the prayers, comment on the prayers, offer advice, love, and support.

The walk from Culiacan to Mazatlan was the best section of the journey thus far. With no money in my pocket (well...I had 3 pesos) and only a half bag of tostada shells, I had no choice. Already 20 miles outside Culiacan, but still another 120 to Mazatlan with nothing in between. What to do? Trust God and take the first step. More coming soon!

The last on the road from Los Mochis to Culiacan. A city I have heard so much about, so many bad things. A city I have spent so much time trying to prepare myself, the project, for security, insurance, everything, boils down to this city at the heart of the narco-violence and war in Mexico.

This is the first album of a series of an incredible story produced in collaboration with Brenda Isabel. As many of you have seen in the news, Culiacan is at the heart of the drug war in Mexico, and I am now in the Heart of Culiacan. Though very different from the perspective framed by mass media, there are many pictures that, well, I can not publish.

I have a habit of taking lots of pictures of buildings. I apologize for those who don't like buildings.
