Gila Bend. A small town, 1700 people, a Burger King, a McDonalds, a Texaco that accepts Chevron credit. I meet two cyclists who have committed to riding 10 miles for every US soldier in Afghanistan who dies. They started with $30,000 and now live on scrap metal. They smoke, we look at maps and talk about elevation gain, alternative routes and they ask for change for coffee. I give them what I have including a fair amount of respect. They have been riding in circles across the US for 5 years, traveling almost 35,000 miles. They have no website, no blog, no foundation, no 501c3. They have two bicycles, each weighing in at 140 lbs, and a promise they made 5 years ago that fuels today.
I leave tomorrow for Casa Grande, for the silence of the desert and my thoughts.
